Transportation modelling and analytics for agencies and industry

Consulting, sponsored research and training from Prof. Sangram Krishna Nirmale's transportation systems group in the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay. We turn travel and traffic data into models that support planning, investment and operations decisions.

What we can do

Each expertise draws directly on methods the group has developed and published.

  • Travel demand modelling and forecasting

Activity-based models that simulate each resident's full day of activities and trips, and trip-based models where they fit better, for city plans, corridors and new projects.

Typical outputs: calibrated activity-based and trip-based models, synthetic populations, scenario forecasts.

  • Public transport ridership forecasting

Route- and station-level ridership forecasts for bus and metro systems, including how frequency, reliability and access affect the number of riders.

Typical outputs: ridership forecasts for new lines and stations, impact estimates for service changes, station catchment analysis.

  • Accessibility and active mobility

Measurement of access to jobs and services, and of first- and last-mile connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists around transit stations.

Typical outputs: accessibility indicators and maps, prioritised locations for improvement.

  • Road safety analysis

Behaviour-based analysis of risk in mixed Indian traffic, using traffic and trajectory data, to inform and evaluate safety measures.

Typical outputs: risk assessments, behaviour models for safety studies and traffic microsimulation.

  • Travel surveys and choice modelling

Design and analysis of household, intercept and stated preference surveys, and models of mode, route and destination choice.

Typical outputs: questionnaires and sampling plans, choice models, value-of-time and willingness-to-pay estimates.

  • Freight and logistics analytics

Freight movement, demand and optimisation problems, in collaboration with the IIT Bombay–FedEx ALFA centre.

Typical outputs: freight flow analysis, optimisation models.

  • Training and capacity building

Short courses and hands-on workshops for agency staff, consultants and faculty on travel demand and choice modelling, with tutorials in R, GAUSS and QGIS.

Typical outputs: custom courses, tutorials using your own data.

Who we can help

  • City and state transport departments
  • Municipal corporations and smart city companies
  • Metro rail corporations and bus undertakings
  • Urban development and planning authorities
  • Transport planning and engineering consultancies
  • Logistics, mobility and technology companies
  • Multilateral agencies, foundations and think tanks
  • Universities and colleges seeking training

How an engagement works

  1. Share the problem

Email a short brief: the question, study area, data you already have and your timeline.

  2. Scope it together

A call or meeting to agree on methods, data needs, deliverables and cost.

  3. Formal agreement

Projects are contracted through IIT Bombay's Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC) as consultancy or sponsored research.

  4. Delivery and handover

Progress reviews, a final report, and the models or code where agreed, with training for your team.

Why work with us

  • Methods that have passed peer review

Our models are published in leading journals, including Transportation Research Parts A, B and C and Transport Policy.

  • Built for Indian conditions

Our demand, ridership and accessibility work uses data from Indian cities such as Bengaluru and Mumbai, and our traffic behaviour models are designed for heterogeneous, lane-less traffic.

  • A team, not a single advisor

PhD researchers, postdoctoral fellows and project staff with experience in demand modelling, econometrics, optimisation and software development.

Tell us about your project

Email a short note on the problem, the data you have and your timeline.
